The life of a flower is short lived, some can say the same for people; using flowers as a symbol for death and life has been a universal norm for our culture and society. The temporality of life is ingrained in our existence as humans and thus gets translated in our actions and the decisions we make during our time alive. The selfish and ignorant action of ending the life of a flower in order to honor our loved ones who have passed is quite ironic. The constant ritualistic behavior that people possess during their funerary practices is a symbol in itself of our blinded denial of death being a part of life. A personal observation has been made that people nearing death smell sweet, as if the inner flower within is on the verge of drying and returning to the earth, much like the body. These paintings are an acrylic based, abstract and expressive representation of blue and red petunias; flowers that symbolize the inevitability of death. The technique in which the paint has been lifted off the wooden canvas creates a 3D effect reminiscent of petals. By playing with these forms and dimensions Christopher Saab offers a uniquely modern and ethereal portrayal of death and the intricacies of the human condition. These colorful artworks exude a sense of calm and an organic beauty with a deep-rooted lesson to live life to its absolute fullest.
